Police in Thirukattupalli in the district on Friday said they arrested the manager of a missionary school hostel in connection with the alleged suicide of a female student over the age of two, even as the BJP alleged an offer conversion from the school management was the cause of the suicide.

Deeming an allegation of sexual harassment after five years by girls over 21 to be invalid, the Madras High Court has overturned a teacher’s detention under the Goondas Act. A divisional bench consisting of Judges PN Prakash and RN Manjula handed down the decision while allowing a habeas corpus petition from R Sudha, wife of a Rajagopalan teacher, on January 7.

With the rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the district, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji on Saturday inaugurated a special ward with an oxygen bed at ESI Hospital in Coimbatore. An additional 200 beds, including 28 with oxygen facility, have been opened at ESI Hospital in the past 72 hours as a precautionary measure, Balaji told reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration.
