‘We have to suffer and we have to fight’ – Nadal ready for grand final

Follow the reaction live as Rafael Nadal produced a stunning comeback after two sets to defeat Daniil Medvedev and claim a record 21st Grand Slam title in an epic Australian Open final. The Spaniard, just months after nearly retiring from the sport with a foot injury, walks away from Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer after winning his second Australian Open title in a classic battle and grueling over five hours in Melbourne.

The 35-year-old beat tournament favorite and world No. 2 Medvedev 2-6, 6-7, 6-4 6-4 7-5. Medvedev, the US Open champion, was aiming to become the first Open-era player to win a second Grand Slam title immediately after winning his first. The Russian moved two sets after winning in a tiebreak at the end of an 84-minute marathon second set, only for Nadal to stage a remarkable fightback.

A forehand winner earned Nadal the crucial serve break in the decider, before saving three break points from Medvedev in a 13-minute service game as he tried to close the match. Nadal was two points from victory as he served for the game at 5-4, only for Medvedev to produce his own response and claim the break. But Nadal fought back with a second break, before serving for the most remarkable victory of his career. Follow the live reaction from the Australian Open final:

Rafa Nadal continues: “I don’t want to forget the volunteers and all those who make this event possible.

“Thank you very much for supporting tennis and myself. It has been difficult to organize tennis tournaments, but in the last two years you have done a great job. I wish you all the best.

“I thought it might be my last Australian Open, but it gave me enough energy to maybe keep going. I will keep trying my best to come back next year. Thank you.”

Turning his attention to the crowd, Nadal then said: “I don’t know what to say guys. For me, it’s just amazing. I didn’t know if I would be back on the circuit to play tennis again. You don’t know what it means to be back here. You are amazing and thank you so much for all your support.

“It is without a doubt one of the most moving [periods] of my career. The support I have received over the past three weeks will remain in my heart. Thank you very much.

“Honestly, I can’t thank all the guys who are there enough – the whole team, all the family, those who aren’t there. How tough the last year and a half have been. In the tough times, you’ve been there every moment to support you. Without you, none of this is possible, so thank you very much for everything.

Medvedev’s speech. A very kind finalist.

He said: “It’s hard to talk after five hours and 30 minutes. I want to congratulate Rafa, what you did was amazing. “I tried to play but I was really tired. The level was really high.

“You raised the level after two sets, I thought you might get tired. You are an amazing champion. You have a great rivalry and it’s not over yet.

“I want to thank my two guys from my dressing room who have been there all week. I hope we have more victories to come. I thank my wife but I think the TV may be broken now. I want to thank my team, I will forget someone but thank you for being with me. My parents, if you’re still watching. Thank you for your support and I will try to be better next time.
