NEWS: FIFA forced to restructure Oceania World Cup qualifiers after COVID-19 withdrawals

FIFA has restructured the format of the Oceania World Cup qualifying tournament after the Cook Islands and Vanuatu were forced to withdraw due to COVID-19 cases.

Both nations were in Group A, but FIFA said any matches involving the two teams “shall be deemed not to have taken place”.

Prior to their withdrawal from the tournament, the Cook Islands were third after losing 2-0 to Solomon Islands.

Vanuatu had yet to play their first game against Tahiti.

As a result, Solomon Islands and Tahiti – the two remaining teams in Group A – will play their group match on Thursday which will determine the winner and group runners-up.
