NEWS: European clubs presented with new Champions League qualification model

The European Club Association has been presented with a new Champions League qualification model – with two places awarded to teams partly based on their historical performance, understands The Athletic.

The Champions League will use the so-called “Swiss model” from the 2024-25 season. This will mean that each team plays in a single league during the group stage, with a guarantee of at least 10 games. There will also be 36 teams in the Champions League proper, four more than the current 32.

Of these places, two would go to the teams with the best historical performances – although they must finish in the places just outside the Champions League places in their own league – and these will be known as the two places. coefficients which take into account a club’s performance over the previous five seasons.

Another spot will go to the fifth most successful league in Europe, and an additional one for the ‘Champions’ route in qualifying.
