Analysis of European free-kick takers: the good, the bad and the genius of James Ward-Prowse

It seems that fan expectations are often quite high when you see a player fielding a direct free kick, but across Europe’s top five leagues the average direct free kick conversion rate has been just 6% since 2016. -17.

Only six times in 100 attempts; barely a goal nailed and far from the 78% conversion rate of a shot from the penalty spot.

There is no discernable trend when looking at how the conversion rate changes from league to league each year, but interestingly Serie A just tops the highest pass rate of the last five seasons. Why?

reports Mark Carey.
