Authorities have announced the opening of cold weather shelters in Charlotte County and North Port on Sunday, January 23.

A Charlotte County press release confirmed that the Homeless Coalition at 1476 Kenesaw Street in Port Charlotte will be providing shelter from the cold today. The announcement came after the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast near freezing temperatures on Sunday evening.

According to the press release, the shelter will accept guests between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Sunday. The American Red Cross will also support the shelter with beds.

For more information, Charlotte County officials advise people to contact Todd Dunn at 941-740-1929 or [email protected].

Due to the expected cold weather, North Port will also have an open cold shelter, North Port Police announced via Twitter.
